EvMak and the Future of African FinTech

An Interview with Evans E. Makundi - Founder and Managing Director of EvMak Tanzania

Let's start with some personal questions. How are you and your family doing in the COVID era?

Tanzania was not hit as bad as other countries and everything went back to normal after one month of country-wide social distancing. My kids are in school now and I am going to work as usual -- although we still take precautions. Generally speaking, things are back to normal here in Tanzania.

Can you tell us about how you founded or joined this company?

In 2011, I was employed but near the end of my contract and I saw this gap of technology advisory services in Tanzania. There were many opportunities for me to assist the country as well as to benefit financially, so that is when I decided to register the organization.

What makes your company unique from others in the field?

We stand out from others with a high level of customer service, with quick solutions, and with reliability.  And we’re a very innovative organization that delivers innovative solutions so people wouldn’t consider us doing business as usual. In fact, our reputation precedes us and our business is growing with zero budgeted on advertising over the years.

Has the coronavirus pandemic affected your business and if so, how are you adjusting?

Coronavirus has affected our business but in a positive manner.  After a few cases appeared in Tanzania, like all businesses locally we had to close our offices and send everyone home. Since our business is oriented to online services, we then saw an increase in the number of customers needing online services. So yes, coronavirus has affected us but from a sales perspective, in a positive way.

What do you think are the major trends in your field?

Automation and Innovative solutions

How would you see your company ten years in the future?

We have grown over the years and more recently, we have started expanding into neighboring countries such as Malawi. In the next ten years, I could see our company with an operational presence in 10 countries or more.
